Lane Culinary and Hospitality Institute, Lane Community College, Eugene, OR
Project type: Concept design / existing building 17
Collaboration with Nir Pearlson, Architect
When Lane Community College expanded its culinary and hospitality program, the new institute called for offices, cooking classrooms, lecture halls with demonstration cooking, and a public-facing restaurant space. This project proposes to extensively remodel an existing building to accommodate an entirely new configuration, stripping down to its essential truss structure and concrete piers. Our proposal envisages new possibilities for the inwardly focused building. Removing part of the bulky roof, we created clerestory windows, flooding the interiors with light and creating a more accessible, open, and welcoming design.
Other additions visible in these sketches include the procession stairs from the lower court, two brewing silos, the upper roof canopy, and extended canopies that mark the entrances on all four sides of the building.
